What is aindham vedham?

Aindham Vedham (ஐந்தாம் வேதம்), also known as Thirukkural, is a classic Tamil text consisting of 1330 couplets or kurals, dealing with various aspects of life. It's considered one of the most important works in the Tamil language and is highly revered for its ethical and moral teachings. The text is divided into three sections:

  • Aram (அறம்), dealing with moral principles or righteousness. Aram outlines virtues and duties.

  • Porul (பொருள்), dealing with wealth, governance, and material possessions. It discusses topics such as governance and how to acquire and manage resources.

  • Inbam (இன்பம்), dealing with love and pleasure. This section explores the theme of love between a man and a woman.

The Thirukkural is attributed to Thiruvalluvar. It's regarded as a non-denominational work, offering universal principles that are applicable to all people, regardless of their religion, caste, or nationality. It's often referred to as the "Fifth Veda" (Aindham Vedham) or the "Bible of the Tamil Land" due to its profound influence and widespread acceptance among the Tamil people. The core of its teaching revolves around leading a virtuous and balanced life by adhering to the principles outlined in the three sections.
